Amish Originals Furniture Co.: Miriam's Journal, First Entry

To many of us, part of the Amish culture is frozen in a time gone-by, and while their traditions and beliefs may differ from the mainstream in our melting pot America, the focus of their lives boils down to what we all want -- home, family, friends, and love.

What is everyday life like for an Amish family? Well, we'd like to introduce you to Miriam. Miriam is Amish and lives in Holmes County, Ohio. In our fast-paced, digital world, letters and journals are the Amish equivalent of our emails and blogs. Miriam is sending Amish Originals Furniture Co. regular journal entries to share her life and the life of her family with you.

We hope you will enjoy meeting and getting to know Miriam and her family. Here is Miriam's first journal entry....

March 23, 2009

Dear Journal,

We are an Amish family living in a hilly area in Ohio, with lots of woods and wildlife.

I am Miriam, married to a wonderful man, Peter. I am a homemaker, which includes cleaning, baking, cooking, sewing, and gardening. I do have some hobbies, like my greenhouse and flower gardening. I also help Peter with the bookwork for his business and do all the shopping for the family.

Peter has a woodworking business. He builds bedroom furniture, kitchen cabinets, and various other things like pie safes, jelly cabinets, office furniture, end tables, etc. He also does many custom pieces.

We have six of our children and 1 son-in-law in our employ, plus two others, so essentially it’s a one-big-family operation. Having a good relationship with our employees and our customers plays a big role in our business; to me that’s important.

We have 14 children in the age range of 23 years to 22-1/2 months. The two oldest girls are married. Amy, married to Simon, who has one daughter, Sally, almost 2 years old. Vera, married to Edward, has a two-week-old baby girl named Ella.

Marie will be 21-years-old in May. We are hoping she will continue working for us until she decides to set up a household of her own. She does have a special friend, Matthew, and there is always that in our mind; that she will want to move on someday. We do support her and will send her with our blessings.

Until next time...

Miriam
