Dear Journal,
Time has a way of getting out of hand for me.
We have been busy canning since the beginning of June, in addition to all the daily chores which never end. June brought us strawberries, peas, and broccoli. Broccoli we can for broccoli soup. Yummy!
We are now in the latter part of July and have been canning green beans and cucumbers; these go on producing over a time period of several weeks. My goal for green beans is 120 quarts each summer. We may need to can more this year as we have been out of beans for quite a while already.
The cucumbers have been doing well this year; better than the past 3 years. We believe it might have been a disease killing my plants before they could produce. I’m shooting for approximately 70 quarts of pickles. We have also canned our red beets this week. We ended up with 28 quarts and 6 pints. We pickle them and serve it at our church meal (when it’s our turn to have church at our house & to serve the meal). It’s mostly tradition, a subject for another time.
We also have plenty of zucchini and onions, a few heads of cabbage left and kohlrabi. The tomatoes have just started, and we will have sweet corn very soon. My family likes all kinds of vegetables.
The furniture business has started to pick up again. We have been busy working on pieces of furniture in preparation of picture taking, a benefit auction, and a furniture show. It caused the orders to pile up. We have also been working on a large kitchen.
We have another exciting thing happen in the family. Simon and Amy have another baby girl. She was born July 22, weighed 7lbs. 5oz. and was 21in. long. They named her Marie. Everything went well and they may come home today. She’ll be another grandchild to love and to spoil :)
I will continue next time….
Miriam
