Inevitably your solid wood furniture will darken. The amount of daily use and exposure to light will directly correlate to how quickly and dramatically this change occurs.
Frequently this color change comes as a bit of a surprise. When family celebrations require adding leaves to a dining table, the effects of use and time are often seen for the first time. Stored under a bed, inside the table, or hidden in a closet, the leaves have not been exposed to light and may be noticeably lighter than the tabletop.
A good tip to ensure even darkening is to keep at least one leaf in the table at all times. This leaf can be rotated with others every few weeks or as you see fit. Some customers have even arranged extra leaves in a room that sees very little use in an effort to allow for some exposure to light. The leaves remain out of the way, but they will age similarly to the table.
